New Tongue Jack
« on: September 01, 2013, 09:33:03 AM »
I want to replace the side mounted tongue jack on my Roamer for one that mounts where the surge brake fluid container used to be. I have electric brakes now.  So I want it right down the middle of the tongue. The side mounted tongue jack lets the trailer sit crooked.
Anyone have any suggestions on what tongue jack to buy ? I want it to be plenty strong for a Roamer. At the same time I don't want it so big that it gets in the way. Comments or suggestions?

Buy me an Electric tongue jack & then you can have mine - it mounts in the middle & it's the OEM Attwood tongue jack.

Greg,

Mike's offer sounds good! If you can ship yours to him the other should bolt up! You both can be happy! ;D I have not seen anything new that looks good out there for tongue jacks. :( Not even on new trailers! :o Let us know though if you see something out there that you think would work! :)

Hector have you seen the price of electric tongue jacks? He wants me to buy him an electic tongue jack.   I thought he was just joking.

McGuiver (John Fetz) here, how about one of Your Scissor jacks, and use your 18V Dril to raise & lower?

Greg,

Here's a tongue jack out here by me for $40. Don't worry, it's a manual crank. lol

Hi Greg,

I recently replaced my original Atwood with this:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005DGK1D2/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I am not sure if it will work with your setup but it is a MASSIVE improvement over the original jack.  Solid build quality and turns easily.  Only downside is that I had to enlarge one of the holes that the jack passes through as it was about 1/4" too narrow.  Using a grinder bit on my drill and a file, I had it done in about 30 minutes.  Got it for about $27.00 shipped a couple months ago.

Cassidy,
That's the kind of jack I was looking at at etrailer.com they have many different sizes and that crank out 15 or more inches. I may have to remove the surge brake Fluid plate on the tongue to get it mounted in the center.  I'm not ready to make decisions on how and where to mount it. All I know is I want to get rid of the side mount jack I have now.

Greg,

It looks good to me! Will you be getting a side winder? That is what I have on my surge brake unit and I feel I get a good crank on it! Not sure about the top winder because I can't put my weight into it. Just to get you thinking. I think the top winder would hit my tanks anyways! ;D ;) :)

     Hector,
I would prefer the side winder over the top winder. I'm sure I will end up buying one way bigger then I really need. Overkill is my motto. :D :D

Greg,

It looks like you got at least two options for the side winder. I think its easier to crank with some power as long as things bolt in right! :)

I have been wanting to convert from a side mount swing away to a center mount. My concern is dropping my tailgate with the trailer hooked up and hitting the jack. I don't have to open the tailgate often while hooked up, but I do on occasion. Let me know how high the jack is above the tongue when mounted.
