Some things have been on my list over 3 years.  My list is physically tacked to my home office door.  I need more hours in a day!

Hi Everyone. My wife Ginger and I (Gerald) just bought a "new" 79 Royal. While reading everything I can find I stumpled upon this wonderful site.
I was a industrial mechanic for about 25 years and used those electrical crimping tools. I believe you can make your own for cheap. Go to Steve's wholesale tool store or what ever they call it in your area and buy a cheap pair of bolt cutters. You can use a small rat tail file to form whatever size swedge you need. (Remember they are cheap so a file will cut the cutting edge of the bolt cutters to what ever size hole you need.) Just remember to take small steps when forming the size you need.

Thanks for all the great info everyone.

Gerald and Ginger

I was told the same thing, use vise grips and then tap with hammer.
When I get my gearbox issues cleared up this is what I will be doing too.

Good luck

Jim

I would use the swaging tool that sells for about $30 at the big-box stores.  I just re-did my chains and while it's not a really difficult job, it's a chore to take everything apart and source the cables and stops and assemble everything.  I'd hate to do all that and then use the vise/tap method and have the stops slip down the road.  Let me tell you, when that swager crushes the stop onto the cable, it is not going ANYWHERE!
