Tires $$$$ WTF ?
« on: August 10, 2009, 09:15:32 PM »
I have a 79 Ramada with 20.5 x 8.0 x 10 on a 5 lug. They are 70 bucks each ! They are 10 ply tires though but this price is w/o the rims !

Is there another tire size I can use that cost less and still performs the same.

Have you checked out Cedar Rapids Tire?  http://www.cedarrapidstire.com

I just purchased 4 tires from there for my two Eagles and paid $10 less for each tire (including shipping) than any local stores I could find.

Plus the tires are Load Range C when all the other local stores only carry Load Range B.

Just a thought...

We got 10 ply tires from Discount tire for $50 each.  We called around checking prices and they matched another store's price.

I was recently pricing tires on the net and found resonable prices for tires alone and with with rims included. Of course shipping can be a difference maker. The best price I found was $48.00 for 20.5x8x10 LR C, 5 lug assemby at NOMANCO in Roann, IN. LR D is $4.00 per tire more. Shipping to my home in Ohio adds $16.90 to the price of each tire. The person I talked to was very helpful.

What is the load rating ? I keep seeing C and D load rating but I have no idea what it is. What is the best ? what do I need ?

I think I may splurge on the tires. Can't ever say those tires are to good for that camper.

I bought new tires from eastern marine.(see link below)  The link is a tech page from them with a general explanation.  The old tire sizes are more expensive because they're not as popular (supply & demand sucks when you demand something there is not a large supply of).  You need load range C tires.  its the old 6 ply rating of about 1100 lbs/tire.  The 1100lbs times 2 tires is 2200lbs plus the 350lb tongue weight gets you the 2400lb weight rating for your trailer.  I bought the loadstar tires because the warranty on them was as good as the carlisle's and I was afraid to try the really cheap ones that they had.  Including the shipping it was still cheaper to buy the tires online & get them mounted locally.

Link as promised:  http://www.easternmarine.com/em_store/tech_info/trailertires_tech_info.html

Hope this helps.

Most retail stores that I've seen carry Load B...it's cheaper for the typical consumer.  I was glad to find online companies still carry Load C.

My local tire shop has 10 ply tires that fit. The guy told me that the skidoo trailers use the same size.

I guess 70 bucks is not too bad for a 10 ply tire.
